Breaking Down California’s SB 253 and SB 261 Climate Disclosure Rules

November 9, 2023

California’s legislature just passed first-in-the nation climate disclosure laws:  SB 253 and SB 261.

SB 253 will require all companies doing business in California with at least US$1bn in revenue to report their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, while SB 261 will compel those with more than US$500mn to publicly report their climate-related financial risks. SB 253 is expected to impact 5,400 companies, and SB 261 upwards of 10,000.

In this webinar, Manifest Climate’s Co-Founder and CEO Laura Zizzo speaks with Erin Koch , Prologis’ Director of Global ESG, alongside Kenneth Wu, Gilead Science’s Executive Director of Corporate Sustainability, and Louie Woodall, Manifest Climate’s Product Content Director. The four break down California’s new climate disclosure rules and how they compare and contrast with those proposed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. They also touch on what California’s new disclosure laws mean for businesses and how they can prepare.
